YYJ Skeptics is a group dedicated to promoting skepticism, science, and rational thinking in Victoria, British Columbia and Vancouver Island.
Our aim is to encourage a rational and inquisitive attitude towards all manner of topics, from the paranormal to alternative medicine, while connecting and interacting with other skeptic groups both in Canada and internationally.
One of our regular events is Skeptics in the Pub (SitP). An informal social event, YYJ Skeptics in the Pub is designed to promote fellowship and social networking among skeptics, critical thinkers, and other like-minded individuals. It provides an opportunity for skeptics and rationalists to talk, share ideas in a casual, relaxed atmosphere, and discuss whatever topical issues come to mind, as well as having fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality. Located in Victoria BC, we have named it the YYJ Skeptics so there will be no confusion with the Australia group.
Generally for the YYJ Skeptics, the following is the definition of a skeptic:
A scientific (or empirical) skeptic is one who questions beliefs on the basis of scientific understanding. Most scientists, being scientific skeptics, test the reliability of certain kinds of claims by subjecting them to a systematic investigation using some form of the scientific method. As a result, a number of claims are considered “pseudoscience” if they are found to improperly apply or ignore the fundamental aspects of the scientific method. Scientific skepticism does not address paranormal or religious beliefs, since these beliefs are, by definition, outside the realm of systematic, empirical testing/knowledge. (Taken from Wikipedia)
Victoria (@toriklassen on Twitter) is a co-founder of YYJ Skeptics. A corporate communications professional and former journalist, she watched James Randi and Carl Sagan on television as a girl, went through many “spiritual” journeys until finally deciding to devote her spare brain cells to rational curiosity. Skepticism is but one of her interests.
